Cedar City, Utah – The Southern Utah University Thunderbirds softball team split a doubleheader with the Portland State Vikings on Friday afternoon, winning the first contest 8-2 and losing the second 7-4.
Thunderbird sophomore Jordan Theurer pitched the entire first game, allowing only six hits. Theurer contributed in the lineup as well, getting on base three times. Kylee Wolf also had a strong performance at the plate, going 3-5 and bringing in three RBIs. Morgan Leonard also hit 3-5 and Megan Reed hit 2-3.
Southern Utah head coach Tom Gray had high praise for Theurer, “She certainly competed today, and that is Jordan Theurer. She is just an amazing competitor.”
In the second game, the Vikings got off to an early lead that proved too much for the Thunderbirds to overcome. Kortney Craker recorded three hits, two RBIs, and two runs for Portland State. Portland State's pitchers combined for six strikeouts, versus just one for the Southern Utah pitchers.
“We played very very well in the first game, did everything we were supposed to do. We hit the ball well and Jordan pitched her tail off, said Coach Gray. “In the second game, I felt we kind of gave it away…But we will make some adjustments and be ready for tomorrow.”
The final game of the Thunderbird's three-game series with the Vikings will start tomorrow, Saturday, April 2, at 12:00 p.m. A livestream of the contest will be available on WatchBigSky.com. The game can also be followed on Twitter @SUUGameday.
