Thunderbirds Fall to Weber State Twice

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird softball team will look to rebound on Saturday, after a pair of tough losses to the Weber State Wildcats on Friday.

Weber State won the first game of the series 18-1, and followed that up with a 9-1 victory over the Thunderbirds in game two.

SUU head coach Tom Gray said he was impressed with the way his team competed, despite playing from behind all day.

“I was very proud that they continued to fight and play hard,” he said. “Nothing went our way today, but let's tip our hats to Weber State for hitting the ball really, really well. That's a very good hitting team, best hitting team we've seen in conference, so tomorrow we're going to come out, continue to fight and hopefully we'll get a different result.”

The Wildcats jumped on the T-Birds quick in the first game, with five runs in the top of the first and 13 more in the top of the second.

SUU was able to score in the bottom of the third, but only one run giving the Wildcats the victory in game one 18-1.

In the second game SUU was able to hold the Wildcats to half the runs, but Weber State still did some damage early as they had a 6-0 advantage after three innings.

SUU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, but WSU's three runs in the top of the fifth and SUU's inability to score any in the bottom of the frame put the mercy rule into play again.

SUU's Kirsten Hostetler said the Wildcats are a formidable opponent, and despite falling behind early she was impressed with how the team continued to fight.

“I think overall we battled pretty hard,” she said. “Weber's a good team, they're number one in the conference right now, they hit the ball really hard but I think we fought pretty well.”

SUU's Morgan Leonard said moving forward it will be all about confidence for the Thunderbirds.

“We have to know that we're better than that team, and we just have to come out and prove it tomorrow,” she said.

SUU will wrap up the series against Weber State on Saturday, with game three of the series scheduled to start at noon.
