CEDAR CITY, Utah - SUU's regular season wrapped up on Saturday at home, as the Thunderbirds were able to knock off North Dakota 5-4 and complete their first Big Sky series sweep of the season.
Saturday was also senior day, as SUU's Kylee Wolf and Amanda Cook were honored after the game for their time at Southern Utah University.
“It hasn't really sunk in yet, we still have practice so I still get to play on the field, I'm not too focused on this being the last game,” she said.
However, their careers will continue next weekend as the Thunderbirds qualified for the Big Sky Conference Tournament yesterday.
“I don't really know how to feel,” Cook said after the game. “It's not over yet, we're going to the Tournament, but it's the last time playing at home, I had all my supporters here, it's a hard thing to stop. But we're still going, it's not over yet.”
SUU head coach Tom Gray said he thinks the team is playing with a lot of confidence at this point of the season, which was the perfect time to get to that point.
“I really feel like we can compete with anybody,” he said. “The way we swing the bat, and one through nine can hit well, so I feel like if we do what we're supposed to do in the circle and defensively then we're right there and can beat anybody.”
The Thunderbirds did all of their damage offensively in the first two innings of play.
After the Fighting Hawks put a run on the board in the top of the fifth the Thunderbirds responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, all coming off a Kendall Kapitzke home run that scored Megan Reed and Payton Hart.
In the bottom of the second the T-Birds scored on a Bailie Nelson double that scored Cook, which was followed up by a Hart triple that brought Nelson across home plate.
The Fighting Hawks put another run up in the top of the third, and put two more up in the top of the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Thunderbirds were able to take the contest 5-4.
Cheyenne Cudahy was awarded the win on Saturday for the Thunderbirds.
The Thunderbirds will now move on to the Big Sky Conference Tournament, which will be held in Ogden after the Weber State Wildcats wrapped up the Big Sky regular season title on Saturday.
The Tournament will get underway on Thursday when the Thunderbirds will kick things off at 9:30 a.m. against the Montana Grizzlies.
