Thunderbirds Drop Regular Season Opener

Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The SUU soccer team traveled to Florida this weekend to take on the Florida Atlantic University Owls in a game that resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Thunderbirds.

Even with the close loss, coach Hogan was very much satisfied with how the team played.

“I'm extremely pleased with how our team played tonight. Any time you can travel this far and play such high quality soccer, you've got to feel accomplished. We made some adjustments at halftime and were able to shut them down and cut the number of shots they took in half,” Hogan said.

FAU would strike first in the match with a goal in the sixth minute by midfielder Elisha Holmes. They would go on to score again in the 25th minute with a goal from forward Sammy Rowland to take a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Thunderbirds wouldn't get on the board until 10 minutes into the second half when junior forward Ally Thimsen netted her first goal of the season with an assist from senior Shelby Green. That would prove to be the final goal of the game however, leaving the Thunderbirds trailing 2-1 at the end of 90 minutes.

Next Friday the team will travel to Utah Valley University to take on the Wolverines for their second game of the season.

“I'm excited to get back to Cedar and shore up a few areas before heading north to face in-state rival UVU in what promises to be an intense rematch of last year's game,” said coach Hogan about the matchup against UVU. Game time is set for 5 p.m. on August 26th in Orem.
