Softball Set to Host Beehive Classic

CEDAR CITY, Utah - With just one more week of tournament play left, the Southern Utah softball team will be hosting their second tournament of the season this weekend when Utah State, Bradley University, and Wagner College come to Cedar City for the Beehive Classic.

Previously on T-Bird Softball

Last weekend the Thunderbirds hosted the St. George Red Desert Classic just 50 miles south of Cedar City at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George, Utah. The 11 team tournament gave the Thunderbirds a chance to compete against opponents from all over the country including UNLV, Binghamton (New York), Nebraska Omaha, UC Santa Barbara and Nevada Reno.

The Thunderbirds showed improvement throughout the weekend, but were only able to pick up one win, a Friday night 4-3 victory over Binghamton. Seniors Payton Hart and Megan Reed each picked up six hits over the weekend. Hart was also responsible for three Thunderbird runs and Reed had two extra-base hits including a two-RBI double in the win over Binghamton.

In the circle, Hanna Wynn and Kirsten Hostetler both put together strong pitching performances. Wynn threw two complete games and picked up her first win of the season against Binghamton. She finished with a 2.50 ERA and six strikeouts on the weekend. Hostetler threw a complete game against UNLV and only gave up one earned run in the 2-1 loss on Friday.

Surveying the Field

The Beehive Classic will be a much smaller tournament than last weekend's Red Desert Classic, but that doesn't mean it will be lacking in talent. The Utah State Aggies (12-4), the Bradley University Braves (11-9), and the Wagner College Seahawks (0-5) will all be making the trip to Cedar City for the four-team tournament.

The Aggies are coming off of a 4-1 weekend at the Red Desert Classic where their only loss came in extra innings to Iowa State and the Braves were in Knoxville for the Tennessee Invitational last weekend where the picked up wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Delaware. This will be just the second tournament of the season for the Seahawks. They got their season started last weekend at Elon University in North Carolina dropping all five of their games.

First Pitch

The Beehive Classic will kickoff Thursday at 3:00 p.m. when the Thunderbirds and the Aggies matchup for the second time this season. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday will all have their own full slate of games starting at 10:00 a.m. each day. The Thunderbirds will play at 3:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday before playing a doubleheader against Wagner and Bradley starting at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday.

All games will take place at Kathryn Berg Field on the campus of Southern Utah University. Admission is free for all fans. Live stats will be available at suutbirds.com and Thunderbird fans will be able to stream all five games at watchbigsky.com.
