Competition Heats Up In California

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird track and field teams were in competition at three different meets on Friday, as they were represented at the Mt. SAC Relays, the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Long Beach Invitational.

Mt. SAC Relays

Mike Tate and Kasey Knevelbaard both had big showings in the 1,500-meter in Torrance, California, on Friday. Tate ran the race in 3:44.09, which was a good enough finish to win his heat. Knevelbaard finished with a time of 3:44.54, and was second in his heat to Olympian David Torrence. Overall, Tate and Knevelbaard finished second and third at the meet in the event.

Southern Utah's relay teams were on full display at the Mt. SAC Relays as well.

The Thunderbird men's 4x400 team set a season-best time on Friday, running a 3:13.99. The team comprised of Brandan Harley, Justin Lewis, Devon Montgomery and Inoa Wahinehookae is right amongst the top in the Big Sky Conference in the event.

The men's 4x100 meter team ran a season-best time of 41.55 on Friday. The Thunderbird women's 4x100 meter team also set a season best, running the event in a time of 47.24.

The women's 4x400 team was also able to win their section at Mt. SAC, with a time of 3:48.12.

Freshman Linnea Saltz won her section of the women's 400-meter dash, setting a season-best time of 55.56.  

Long Beach Invitational

Freshman thrower Jeff Rowley made a big impression at the Long Beach Invitational on Friday.

The native of Nephi, Utah, set a new personal best in the javelin after throwing it 210', which also moves him up the SUU record book into the fourth spot in the history of the program.

Bryan Clay Invitational

T-Bird Jason Quinn set a new personal best in the men's 1,500-meter at the Bryan Clay Invitational, running a 3:55.43.

Bryan Espino hit a new personal record in the 800-meter, with a time of 1:52.97.

Maddy Kauffman also ran a personal best in the women's 1,500-meter, hitting a time of 4:42.16. Brighton Glassman wasn't too far behind with a personal best in the same event of 4:43.28. Kasandra Nordgren hit a new personal record as well, with a 4:50.80.

Paige Cardiff ran the fastest time for the Thunderbirds in the event, hitting a 4:38.88.
