Women’s Basketball Heads Back On the Road to Take On Idaho and Eastern Washington

CEDAR CITY, Utah -- With two Big Sky Conference victories to build off, the Thunderbird women's basketball team is headed to the Pacific Northwest to take on the Idaho Vandals and the Eastern Washington Eagles.

Last Time Out

Led by a 20 point performance from Rebecca Cardenas, the Thunderbird women's basketball team knocked off Northern Arizona in Flagstaff 60-57.

The victory moved the Thunderbirds to a 3-13 overall record, and a 2-3 mark in Big Sky Conference play.

Cardenas not only finished with 20 points, but also had seven rebounds, five steals and four assists in 36 minutes of action. She was the only T-Bird in double figures in the contest.

Super Sophomore

Cardenas has had a major impact for the Thunderbirds this season in many different areas.

She leads the team in assists with 73, and also leads the team in steals with 48. She's second on the team in rebounding with 74 total, and an average of 4.6 rpg. Standing 5' 5'', that is a very impressive feat.  

She has also picked up her scoring since Big Sky play started. In the five games the T-Birds have played against conference foes, Cardenas has averaged 14.8 ppg.

Opponent Preview: Idaho Vandals (6-10, 2-3 Big Sky)

The Vandals of Idaho will come to Cedar City looking to get back on track, losing three of their last four contests. Their most recent result was a loss to Eastern Washington.

Two time recipient of Big Sky Women's Basketball Player of the Week, Mikayla Ferenz leads the Vandals scoring efforts averaging 22.9 points per contest. Taylor Pierce (15.3 ppg) and Geraldine McCorkell (14.4 ppg) both average in double digits for the Vandals. McCorkell also leads the team in rebounding, pulling in 6.6 boards a contest.

Vandal head coach Jon Newlee is in his ninth year at the head of the program, and has led the Vandals to the postseason on five different occasions.  

Opponent Preview: Eastern Washington Eagles (8-9, 3-2 Big Sky)

The Eagles of Eastern Washington will head to Flagstaff to take on Northern Arizona before making their way to Cedar City, but will start their road trip with a two game winning streak, and pulling out victories in three of their last four contests.

Delaney Hodgins leads the Eagles in scoring, averaging 19.8 ppg so far this season. She also leads the team in rebounding with eight per contest. Violet Kapri Morrow is the only other Eagle that averages in double figures, sitting at 11.9 ppg.

Wendy Schuller is in her 17th season as the head coach of Eastern Washington.

Southern Utah and Idaho will tip off at 7 p.m. MT on Thursday, with Saturday's contest against Eastern Washington set to begin at 3 p.m. MT.
