GREELEY, Colo. - MaKenzie Lawrence's stellar season continued Sunday afternoon as the senior scored her seventh goal of the 2018 season Sunday afternoon in Southern Utah's 1-3 loss to Northern Colorado.
"It was a good game. I thought the first half was very even and we created a lot of really good chances, just couldn't find the net," head coach Fred Thompson said. "The weather sped the game up and the ball moved really fast on the ground so that was something we had to adjust to and I thought we did that fairly well. Ellee Layton was exceptional today. She left it all out on the field and did everything we asked of her."
The Bears were the only team to score in the opening half, getting on the board early with a goal in the fifth minute. They would score again in the 64th minute to go up 2-0.
Lawrence would answer for the Thunderbirds a little under two minutes later as a shot from Devri Hartle was deflected and found its way right to her feet and she was able to put it in the back of the net.
Lawrence has now scored four goals in her last four games and is tied for the Big Sky goal scoring lead with UNC's Maddie Roberts, who also had a goal in the match to keep pace with Lawrence. With two games left to go in the regular season, Lawrence is now one goal shy of the Southern Utah single season record of eight goals set by Brooklyn Phillips in 2006.
The Bears would add to their lead not too long after Lawrence's goal, making it the final score of 3-1.
"Obviously we'll want to finish strong next week at home. I think we are starting to see a little more offense than we have in the past and that will give us a good chance to get that done," Thompson said.
The Thunderbirds will host Eastern Washington and the University of Idaho next weekend for their final home matches of the season.
