CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Southern Utah Thunderbird track and field team will be opening their indoor season as they compete at the Hoosier Open Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana. The Thunderbirds will compete on Friday, December 7.
Athletes to Watch This Week
As the Thunderbirds travel to Indiana, Angie Nickerson will be an asset for the team as she competes in the 3,000-meter. In her most recent track and field season, Nickerson finished with two Big Sky Championship titles in both the 5,000-meter and the 3,000-meter.
Nickerson also earned a ranking of the second fastest time in SUU history when she clocked in at 16:30.3 in the 5,000-meter.
This weekend, Kasey Knevelbaard will be returning to the Thunderbirds after a redshirt season Knevelbaard will be competing in the 5,000-meter and is expected to be a strong athlete for the Thunderbirds.
During the 2018 indoor season, Knevelbaard surged into SUU history when he broke the record in the mile with a time of 3:55.9. The senior athlete also landed the third place school record in the 3,000-meter during the season.
Over the course of the 2018 campaign, Knevelbaard was named Big Sky Athlete of the week prior to finishing with two Big Sky Championship titles in both the distance medley relay and the mile.
Knevelbaard finished the season with a fifth place finish at the NCAA National Indoor Championships with a time of 4:00.57 in the mile claiming All-American status as he represented SUU.

"Kasey is a very athletic person. This weekend we will get the chance to see just how athletic he is," commented head coach Eric Houle. "It's going to be a tough competition so it will test what he is really capable of so we can see what direction we need to go in as the season continues It's the same concept for Angie this weekend."
"As we go into the season adding on our jumpers, throwers and sprinters into the mix of our distance runners will really make us contenders," added Houle."When we combine the amazing athletes we have, it will make us a strong team that will have a strong season."
