Box Score BATON ROUGE, La. - The Southern Utah softball team started play in the Purple & Gold Challenge hosted by LSU Friday morning. The team played Oregon State and Louisiana Tech, falling in both games despite a great outing by starting pitcher Samantha Guile in game two.
Game One: SUU 1, OSU 6
Southern Utah started the day with a matchup against the Oregon State Beavers. Sarah Murphy scored the first run of the game when she came home on Taylei Williams' RBI single in the first inning.
The Thunderbirds would hold the 1-0 lead over OSU until the bottom of the third inning when the Beavers scored four runs on an RBI double and a three-run home run. The Beavers would score again the fifth inning, making it 6-1 on back-to-back singles.
The Thunderbirds finished with five total hits, but were not able to plate another run in the game.
Kendall Kapitzke had two hits in the game and Williams had the lone RBI.
Game Two: SUU 1, LA Tech 5
Guile started game two against the Bulldogs and threw her second complete game of the season, pitching all six innings and giving up just four hits and zero earned runs.
The Thunderbirds ran into trouble in the second inning when they committed three errors in the inning, allowing the Bulldogs to score four unearned runs and jump out to a 4-0 lead.
Southern Utah answered back with a run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from Williams that scored Nicole Simonson from third after she reached on a bunt single. However, Louisiana Tech would get the run back in the bottom of the inning after another Thunderbird error.
Guile kept the Bulldogs hitless through the next three innings, but the Thunderbirds couldn't capitalize and Tech came out with the 5-1 win.
Guile started the game with a 3.94 ERA and was able to lower it almost a run and a half to 2.52 with her performance Friday. Madison Tuft finished the game with two hits (2-4), the first two of her career.
The Thunderbirds will be back at Tiger Park early Sunday morning as they take on Central Arkansas at 8:30 a.m. Mountain time. They will also play No. 7 LSU at 4:00 p.m. later that day.
