Thunderbirds Split Doubleheader With Utah Valley

Box Score

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team split a doubleheader with the Utah Valley Wolverines at Dixie State's Karl Brooks Field on Sunday behind four home runs and a shutout from Haley Wall.

Game One: SUU 1, UVU 14

Game one of the doubleheader did not go the way the Thunderbirds would have liked. The Wolverines scored 13 runs in the opening inning, going through their batting order two full times.

Kalei Watkins was able to stem the bleeding, pitching through the next four innings giving up just three hits and an unearned run.

Southern Utah picked up a run in the second inning on Mikaela Thomson's second home run of the season, a solo shot to left field.

The game would end after five innings with the Wolverines up 14-1.

Game Two: SUU 8, UVU 0

The Thunderbirds flipped the script in game two, shutting out the Wolverines and beating them 8-0 in six innings.

Southern Utah struck first, scoring two runs in the third inning on Kendall Kapitzke's two run home run to left field, her second of the season.

They broke the game open in the fifth as they scored five runs on two hits. Those two hits were a two-run home run from Taylei Williams and and three-run shot from Watkins. Kapitzke, Thomson, and Kaitlin Williams all scored runs in the inning after drawing walks.

Williams ended the game the following inning with a RBI single to center field that scored Madison Tuft and gave the Thunderbirds the 8-0 win. Williams finished the game 3-4 with three RBIs. Kapitzke was 2-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.

Wall started the game in circle for the Thunderbirds and pitched six innings of three-hit ball, to earn her first shutout, complete game, and win of the season. She struck out three Wolverines in the process.

The Thunderbirds will be back in St. George next weekend as they host the St. George Red Desert Classic at Canyons Softball Complex.
