CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will be hosting the 2018 St. George Red Desert Classic this weekend from Friday March 2 to Sunday March 4 at the Canyons Softball Complex in St. George, Utah.
Last Time Out
Last weekend the Thunderbirds hosted the Utah Valley Wolverines for a doubleheader at Dixie State's Karl Brooks Field in St. George. The teams split the doubleheader, with the Wolverines taking game one 14-1 and the T-Birds getting revenge in game two 8-0.
In the second game, Haley Wall pitched a three-hit shutout for her first win of the season. She struck out three Wolverines on her way to the victory. Taylei Williams was a combined 4-6 on the day with three RBIs and a run scored. She hit her first home run of the season in game two, a two run shot to left center.
2018 St. George Red Desert Classic
For the second year in a row, Southern Utah will be hosting the St. George Red Desert Classic in conjunction with the City of St. George. Seven teams will be making the trek to St. George this weekend to compete in the tournament including: Boise State, Montana, Nevada, Seattle U, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, and Weber State.
Most of the teams participating in the Red Desert are familiar opponents for the Thunderbirds. Montana and Weber State are fellow Big Sky members and Boise State and Nevada matched up with the T-Birds last year. Southern Utah has already played UVU three times this season with the Wolverines taking two of the three games.
Game Info
The Thunderbirds will be playing two games per day for a total of six games throughout the weekend. On Friday they will compete against Seattle U at 12:30 p.m. and Nevada at 3:00 p.m. On Saturday they will take on Nevada at 12:00 p.m. and Boise State at 2:30 p.m. Things will wrap up for the T-Birds on Sunday with Seattle U at 10:00 a.m. followed by Utah Valley at 12:30 p.m.
There will be no live stream this weekend, but live stats will be available at suutbirds.com. For fans wanting to attend the games, day passes are available for ten dollars for adults and three dollars for children. Fans can also purchase tournament passes at twenty-five dollars for adults and five dollars for children. Passes will be available for purchase at the gate or at sgcity.org/reddesertclassic.
