CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will open Big Sky Conference play this Friday March 23, as they host the Weber State Wildcats at Kathryn Berg Field.
Last Time Out
Last week the Thunderbirds played a doubleheader against the BYU Cougars in Provo. Southern Utah dropped both games to the Cougars, scoring just two runs in the process.
Kalei Watkins had a nice night for the T-Birds, going 2-4 with a home run in the second game.
The Thunderbirds are second in the Big Sky when it comes to the long ball with 15 as a team. Watkins, Taylei Williams, and Kendall Kapitzke all have four home runs on the season.
Scouting Report: Weber State Wildcats (12-13)
The Wildcats come into Big Sky play sitting in third place in the conference with a 12-13 overall record. The reigning Big Sky regular season champs have competed in five tournaments this season including the St. George Red Desert Classic hosted by Southern Utah and the Grand Canyon Kickoff where they played then-top ranked Oklahoma.
Sophomore Ashlyn Visser leads the Wildcats offensively, hitting .363 so far this season with seven home runs and 28 RBIs. Reigning Big Sky Freshman of the Year, Takesha Saltern is hitting .329 in her sophomore season.

Friday's doubleheader at Kathryn Berg Field is set to start at 1:00 p.m. The second game will begin about 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Saturday's series finale will also start at 1:00 p.m.
