Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team opened Big Sky Conference play Friday at Kathryn Berg Field with a doubleheader against the Weber State Wildcats.
Game One: SUU 1, WSU 12
Game one was all Wildcats as they scored 12 runs while holding the Thunderbirds to just one. WSU's Ashlyn Visser opened the game with a grand slam to make it 4-0 early.
Kendall Kapitzke got the Thunderbirds on the board in the second inning with a solo shot to straight away center field, her fifth home run of the season.
The Wildcats had two more big innings with five in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early.
Madison Tuft and Mikaela Thomson had the only other hits for the Thunderbirds.
Game Two: SUU 13, WSU 7
Southern Utah's bats came alive in game two as they put up a season-high 14 hits and took the victory 13-7.
After scoring a run in the first on a Kapitzke RBI single, the Thunderbirds opened up a 10-0 lead with a nine-run third inning. They had eight hits in the inning including a grand slam from Kaitlin Williams, a solo shot from Sarah Murphy, and RBI singles from Taylei Williams, Kapitzke, and Thomson.
The Wildcats scored runs in the fourth and fifth inning to draw closer and stay alive, but RBIs from Murphy and Javlyn Weaver would keep them at bay and give the Thunderbirds the win.
Haley Wall earned her second win of the season, starting in the circle for the T-Birds and pitching 4.2 innings.
The teams will play the series finale tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. at Kathryn Berg Field.
