Thunderbirds Headed to Colorado for Big Sky Series With Bears

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will continue Big Sky play this week in Greeley, Colorado against the Bears of Northern Colorado. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday March 30 and the series finale on Saturday March 31.

Last Time Out

Last week the Thunderbirds opened Big Sky play by hosting the Weber State Wildcats for a three-game series. Southern Utah was able to take one game from the Wildcats, a 13-7 win in the second game of the series.

The two teams combined for 10 home runs, including setting a Big Sky season-high with five home runs in game two. Kendall Kapitzke went 5-10 over the weekend with at least one hit in each game. The junior also had four RBIs, scored three runs, and hit a home run in game one.

Scouting Report: Northern Colorado Bears (20-16, 2-1 BSC)

Coming into Big Sky play last week, the Bears were the top team in the conference with an 18-15 record in non-conference play. Northern Colorado hosted Sacramento State for their first Big Sky series last weekend and was able to take the series 2-1, winning the first two games 12-4 and 9-8.

Junior Valerie Vidal has been the story for the Bears this season in the circle. Vidal leads the Big Sky in ERA (2.21), wins (13), innings pitched (129.2), and is second in strikeouts (97). Vidal has been named Big Sky Pitcher of the Week twice this season.

Junior Jordyn Wiatrak leads the Bears offensively with a .330 batting average and 23 RBIs.

Game Info

Friday's doubleheader is set to begin at 12:00 p.m. Mountain time at Gloria Rodriguez Field. The second game will follow about 35 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Saturday's finale is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
