Box Score CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Thunderbird softball team dropped the first two games of their three-game series with the Montana Grizzlies on Friday afternoon, with the third and final game set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
The first game was incredibly close, as the two teams were knotted up at 1-1 heading into the seventh inning. In the top of the seventh, however, the Grizzlies got hot and put up three runs on the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah was unable to respond, giving the visitors a 4-1 victory in the first game of the day.
The Thunderbirds struck first in game two of the doubleheader, as Taylei Williams hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. The Griz responded in the top of the third with a solo shot of their own to tie up the contest.
UM had two runs in the top of the fifth, and two more in the top of the sixth to create some separation from SUU. Despite responding with one run in the bottom of each of those frames, the Thunderbirds fell in the second contest 5-3.
Kalei Watkins and Taylei Williams each finished the day with a home run adding to their team leading totals. Watkins also pitched 1.2 innings of relief in game two and gave up just two hits and no runs.
Williams, Kendall Kapitzke, and Javlyn Weaver all finished game two 2-for-3.
