BOULDER CITY, Nev. -- The second round of the 2018 Big Sky Women's Golf Championship came to a close on Saturday afternoon, with the Thunderbirds moving up the leaderboard thanks to a pair of sophomores.
Both Kyla Smith and Kamonwan (Poy) Prasurtwong shot a one-under 71 on Saturday, which helped propel the Thunderbirds form ninth to sixth in the team standings.
Smith (76, 71) will enter the final day of the competition in the top-10, finishing 36 holes in a tie for ninth on the leaderboard. Prasurtwong (80, 71) improved by nine shots on Saturday to move into a tie for 15th.
Senior Nicole Jones had a solid day for the Thunderbirds in her final Big Sky Tournament, shooting a 74. Sitting at 154 for the tournament, Jones will enter the final day in a tie for 28th.
Fellow senior Miranda Reyes shot a 79 in the second round, finishing 36 holes with a 160.
Lindsay Aleman was fifth for Southern Utah, shooting an 81.
The Thunderbirds haved 22 shots off their team score on Saturday, shooting a 295 after hanging a 317 on Friday. Their 612 puts the T-Birds in sixth place with 18 holes to play at Boulder Creek.
"We showed a lot of improvements on the golf course today," SUU head coach Richard Church said. "We're proud of the way we were able to bounce back after yesterday's round, and I'm really impressed with the way both Kyla and Poy played today. They both had very solid days for us."
Idaho, led by Sophie Hausmann (73, 65) leads the way in Nevada, and will have a five stroke lead heading into Sunday's action.
Sacramento State and Portland State round out the top three, with Eastern Washington and Northern Arizona sitting in fourth and fifth respectively.
The Thunderbirds will tee off at 9:30 MT on Sunday, which will be 8:30 PT. SUU will play with Northern Arizona and Eastern Washington for the final 18 holes.
