Box Score POCATELLO, Idaho - The Southern Utah softball team opened a three-game series with Idaho State Friday afternoon with two close losses to the Bengals.
The Thunderbirds held leads in both games as Sarah Murphy opened game one with a leadoff home run before the Bengals opened a 7-2 lead by the end of the third inning. The Thunderbirds were able to get some runs back in the fourth and sixth innings, but ultimately fell 7-5.
In game two, Southern Utah built a 4-0 and held it over the first six and a half innings. Idaho State scored all five of their runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game 5-4.
The Thunderbirds outhit the Bengals on the day, picking up 10 hits in each game and out-hitting them 20-13.
Kalei Watkins had a monster day at the plate going 5-for-7 on the day with two runs scored and a RBI. Murphy had a big game one finishing 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI. Six Thunderbirds had multiple hits in a game.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in Pocatello.
