CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will play their final Big Sky series of the 2018 regular season this weekend as they host the Portland State Vikings at Kathryn Berg Field.
Last Time Out
Last weekend Southern Utah played their final road series of the season as they took on the Idaho State Bengals in Pocatello. The Thunderbirds were able to take one game from the Bengals, a 4-0 win in the series finale. Kalei Watkins threw a seven inning shutout while hitting three doubles in the win.
Watkins went 8-for-10 in the series with five doubles and a run scored in each game.
The Thunderbirds also hosted the BYU Cougars for a makeup game on Monday April 30, but dropped that contest 18-4 in five innings.
Scouting Report: Portland State Vikings (16-31, 9-8 BSC)
The Vikings will come into the weekend currently sitting in fourth place in the Big Sky Conference standings. The Vikings have won their last three Big Sky series including most recently a series win over Weber State at home. They have won six of their last eight conference matchups.
Junior Kaela Morrow leads the Vikings offensively with a .333 batting average in 46 games. SHe leads the team in RBIs (29) and home runs (7). Junior Alyssa Burk is the workhorse in the circle for the Vikings, having pitched 144 innings this season with a 3.16 ERA. Burk has a 11-12 record and has thrown 16 complete games to date.
The Vikings are coached by Meadow McWhorter who is in just her second season at the helm of the program.
Game Info
Saturday's doubleheader is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. at Kathryn Berg Field with the second game following about 35 minutes after the conclusion of the first. Sunday's series finale is also set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Sunday's game will also be Senior Day for four Thunderbirds who are set to graduate from Southern Utah University on Friday May 4. Sarah Murphy, Nicole Simonson, Haley Wall, and Kaitlin Williams will all be recognized in a ceremony prior to the start of the game.
