Thunderbirds Sweep Doubleheader With Vikings

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team swept Portland State Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader at Kathryn Berg Field, outscoring the Vikings 17-7.

Game One: SUU 4, PSU 3

The Thunderbirds never trailed the whole day, scoring first in game one on a first inning double by Kendall Kapitzke and never looking back.

The Vikings tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly, but Southern Utah would take the lead right back in the fourth on a sacrifice fly of their own from Kapitzke. Kaitlin Williams also added a solo home run in the inning to make it 3-1.

Portland State scored again in the fifth inning, but Kaitlin Williams picked up her second RBI of the game in the sixth on a single that brought home Taylei Williams and made it 4-2.

The Vikings would score again in the seventh, but could not complete the comeback as the Thunderbirds took the game 4-3.

Haley Wall picked up the win in the circle for the Thunderbirds, giving up just one earned run in seven innings of work. She also struck out two Vikings in the game.

Taylei Williams went 3-for-3 in the game with three runs scored. Kaitlin Williams was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Game Two: SUU 13, PSU 4

The Thunderbird bats really came to life in game two, as Southern Utah used an eight-run inning to take the series and the doubleheader.

The Vikings struck first, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Darian Lindsey. The Thunderbirds answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning with the help of three Viking errors in the inning. Nicole Simonson hit a double in the inning and picked up two RBIs.

The eight-run inning came in the third inning as the Thunderbirds strung together eight hits including home runs from Sarah Murphy and Kapitzke.

The Vikings added two more runs in the fourth inning, but Murphy added an insurance run in the home half of the inning on a single to right field to make it 13-4.

The Thunderbirds closed out the game in five innings for just the second time this season.

Simonson went 3-for-3 in the game with three RBIs and two runs scored. Four other Thunderbirds had multi-hit games with Murphy picking up three RBIs and Kapitzke picking up two.

Samantha Guile picked up the win in the circle in game two, giving up just four hits in five innings of work. She added two strikeouts to her team leading season strikeout total.

The Thunderbirds will go for the series sweep on Senior Day tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Kathryn Berg Field.
