CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team fell to the Nevada Wolf Pack 2-1 Sunday afternoon in a game in which all scoring was done on penalty kicks.

"Sunday game are always about hard work and heart more than anything else. I thought both teams scrapped, but obviously I'm a little disappointed with how things ended up," head coach Fred Thompson said "We still are kind of just going with the flow a little bit. We need to control the game a little bit more overall. It's early in the season and we have a lot of young players so we'll grow into it."

The opening half in Cedar City ended in a 0-0 stalemate with the Thunderbirds outshooting the Wolf Pack 6-4. Southern Utah had two shots on goal in the first half, but couldn't find their way into the back of the net.

All of the scoring for both teams was done in the second half, with the Thunderbirds striking first on a penalty kick that was awarded to Devri Hartle. Hartle put it past a diving Nevada goalkeeper for her second goal of the young season. She now leads SUU in points with five total on the season (two goals, one assist).

"She earned that PK by running at somebody, getting into the box, and being dangerous," Thompson said of Hartle's goal. "I like to see that sort of confidence which was awesome and I wish we could have done a little more of that."

Unfortunately the Wolf Pack were awarded penalty kicks of their own in the 75th and 82nd minutes of play and were able to convert both of them to take a 2-1 lead with about 18 minutes to play.

The Thunderbirds weren't able to break through in the final minutes and ultimately lost the match 2-1.

Southern Utah will now hit the road for three straight matches before returning home on September 14.
