CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team and head coach Kortny Hall are happy to announce the hiring of Shannel Blackshear as assistant coach ahead of the 2019 season.
"I am excited to bring Shannel on board and believe that she compliments our staff well," Hall said. "Her knowledge of hitting fundamentals will positively impact our offense and assist in us being a more competitive program."
Blackshear comes to Southern Utah from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio where she has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach. During her time at CWRU, the Spartans had an overall record of 58-29 including a 2018 campaign in which they finished second in the University Athletic Association and advanced all the way to the final round of the NCAA DIII National Championship for only the second time in program history.
Blackshear's main responsibilities at Case Western Reserve included being the lead recruiter for the Spartans as well academic coordinator, strength and conditioning, and fundraising responsibilities.
Before joining the staff at CWRU, Blackshear was a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas for the 2015 and 2016 seasons, responsible for assisting coaches with team practices, camps, and recruiting.
Blackshear played collegiate softball for the University of Wisconsin from 2010-2013 where she was a third baseman for the Badgers. She currently holds career records in RBIs, home runs, slugging percentage, OPS, and total bases.
Blackshear earned her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin and a Master's Degree in Recreation and Sports Management from the University of Arkansas.
