Thunderbirds Downed By Broncos In Boise

BOISE, Idaho - The Southern Utah soccer team wrapped up their weekend road trip Sunday afternoon in Boise with a 3-0 loss to the Boise State Broncos.

"It's a Sunday after some tough travel so this game was always going to be about coming out and working hard and I think we did that today," head coach Fred Thompson said. "I also think we had a little bit more in us, we just couldn't quite get there. As we continue on in the season we will keep reaching for that and hopefully get better results in these Sunday games in the future."

The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board in the first half, going up 1-0 in the first minute of play. Down early, the Thunderbirds reacted with aggressive play and controlled the ball very well during the final 20 minutes of the half. However, they would not be able to break through and went into halftime down a goal.

The Broncos came out of halftime with another half-opening goal in the 53rd minute of play to make it 2-0. The Thunderbirds kept up their physical play holding the score at 2-0 until the 86th minute when Raimee Sherle scored her second goal of the game to make it 3-0.

Southern Utah would not be able to break through in the final minutes of play, dropping the match 3-0.

"Right now I think we are ahead of where we were last year, but we still have a lot to work on. We still have some tough competition as we get ready for conference play and I think conference could be really good for us," Thompson said. "Everyday I'm learning something about the team and we've got three more games to help them in their growth and their direction to get them closer to where we need to be. We'll get back tonight, have the day off tomorrow, and then get back to work on Tuesday so we are ready for Saturday's game."

The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Saturday September 8 against the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Nebraska.
