Thunderbirds Set to Take On Pair of West Coast Big Sky Teams

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team will continue their conference schedule this weekend with matches against Portland State on Friday October 4 and Sacramento State on Sunday October 6.

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds opened Big Sky play last weekend with a 3-2 loss to Northern Arizona.

MaKenzie Lawrence and Madison DeHerrera were the goalscorers for the Thunderbirds. Lawrence's goal was her second of the season and 14th of her career, which moved her into fourth all-time at Southern Utah. DeHerrera scored her first goal of the season and of her career on a free kick awarded after a NAU foul.

Scouting Report: Portland State Vikings (2-9-0, 1-1-0 BSC)

The Vikings opened their 2019 season with an eight-game losing streak before picking up their first two wins recently 1-0 over Pacific and 3-2 over Idaho State.

Freshman Sienna Higinbotham and junior Rilee Castilla lead the Vikings in goal scoring with three each. Higinbotham holds the points lead with seven points (three goals and an assist). Freshman Enya Hernandez is the leading goalkeeper for PSU with a 1.38 goals against average and an .800 save percentage.

The Vikings escaped Cedar City with a 3-2 victory over the Thunderbirds last season.

Scouting Report: Sacramento State Hornets (6-1-4, 0-0-2 BSC)

The Hornets have the best overall record in the Big Sky having picked up six non-conference wins earlier in the season. They opened conference play last week with two draws against Weber State and Idaho State.

Sacramento State leads the Big Sky in both goals scored and goals allowed, dominating on both sides of the ball. Junior Kylee Kim-Bustillos leads the conference individually in goals scored with six on the season so far. Fellow junior Aubrey Goodwill is tied for the conference lead in assists with four.

The Thunderbirds defeated the Hornets last season 3-2 on a game-winner from Lawrence in the 82nd minute.
