CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird volleyball team fell to the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks at home on Monday evening, as the visitors from Flagstaff emerged victorious 3-1.
"I think we had a very good gameplan coming out from what we saw on video, and we had them out of system and served tough," SUU head coach Pete Hoyer said. "In the second set I think they recognized that our block was going to be an issue for them, and they just kept the ball in play. We had a little bit of trouble in sets two and three sustaining long rallies, and turning our transition game into kills and that played into their hands. And I think we took our foot off the gas serving."
The opening set was a dominating one for the Thunderbirds. They held all the momentum early on, and climbed out to a 12-4 advantage over the Lumberjacks. With the score at 18-11 the Thunderbirds went on a 6-0 run, and ultimately put the first set away 25-13.
In the second set the Lumberjacks had the momentum swing their way, and took the frame 25-15.
The third set was closer than the second, but ultimately went to NAU 25-21.
The fourth and final set was incredibly close, as neither team led by more than four points throughout, but the Lumberjacks were able to close it out 25-23 and take a 3-1 win.
Shannon Webb led the Thunderbirds in kills with 22 total. Stacey Hone had 16 and Thea Leiataua finished with 14.
Corrin Peterson dished out 54 assists on the evening.
