CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team won their first match of the season 2-1 over the Idaho State Bengals in overtime. MaKenzie Lawrence scored the game-winning golden goal in the 98th minute of play to lock up the victory.
The Thunderbirds struck first as Alia Shatswell scored her first goal of the season in the 25th minute, taking a rebound from a shot by Lawrence and putting it past the ISU goalkeeper to make it 1-0 SUU.
Idaho State answered back in the 39th minute with a goal of their own from Michaela Didericksen to tie things up 1-1.
The score would remain that way for the rest of regulation, despite the Thunderbirds outshooting the Bengals in the second half 7-6, sending the match to overtime.
Only one shot was taken by either team in the seven minutes and ten seconds of overtime. That shot belonged to Lawrence, who threaded a long cross from Amberly Hastings past a diving ISU goalkeeper for the overtime victory. The goal was Lawrence's fifth of the season and gives her 17 in her career with two games to play.
The Thunderbirds will host Weber State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for Senior Day.
