RECAP | Thunderbird Volleyball Sweeps the Vikings at Home

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Southern Utah volleyball team defeated the Portland State Vikings 3-0 on Thursday evening for their sixth Big Sky Conference win. The T-Birds are now 13-12 overall and 6-7 in BSC play.

"Our offense found their mojo for the first time in a few weeks," said head coach Pete Hoyer. "I have to give credit to Corrin Peterson. She has been a consistent quarterback, for lack of better terms, for our team game after game. The hitters played aggressively and our defense stepped up in a phenomenal way in yet another new rotation."

Shannon Webb led the Thunderbirds in kills with 14, followed by Stacey Hone who had 12. Corrin Peterson dished out 35 assists. Defensively, Thea Leiataua tallied 10 digs followed closely by Peterson who had nine.

The Thunderbirds opened the first set by going up by four over the Vikings at the 10 point mark. SUU continued to carry their lead to 16-11 where the Vikings called a timeout. Returning from the break the Vikings went on a 3-0 scoring run, bringing them within three of SUU. The Thunderbirds answered Portland's scoring run with a 6-0 run of their own, pushing SUU's lead to eight at 22-14. The Thunderbirds closed the set with a kill from Madison Williams at 25-16.

SUU was the first to ten in the second set as well, this time leading by two at 10-8. After play continued, the Thunderbirds only lengthened their lead as they went up by five at 18-13. Mckenzie Dowell closed the set for SUU with a kill at 25-17.

The Vikings held an early lead over the Thunderbirds at 11-8. SUU called a timeout at 15-10 in hopes to comeback from the five point deficit. Coming out of the break PSU pushed their lead to six at 18-12. The T-Birds went on a 4-0 scoring run to bring the gap within one at 21-20. A kill from Hone knotted the score at 21-21. SUU claimed the set 25-xx, sweeping the Vikings 3-0 in the set.
