CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will be playing in the state of Utah for the first time this season as they host the Red Desert Classic this weekend form March 1-3 in St. George at the Canyons Softball Complex.
Last Time Out
Last weekend the Thunderbirds were in California for a three-game series with the University of San Diego. They weren't able to pick up a win in the series, but held leads in all three games.
Madison Tuft was the only Thunderbird to have a hit in all three games, finishing the weekend 3-for-10. Dream Weaver had two hits in both of the last two games, finishing the weekend 4-for-9.
Both Tuft and Weaver are hitting .308 on the season so far with nine combined runs, 16 combined hits, and three combined stolen bases.
Red Desert Classic Tournament Preview
Seven teams, including Southern Utah, will be making the trip to St. George for the Red Desert Classic. Baylor University, CSU Bakersfield, University of Notre Dame, St. Mary's College of California, Utah State, and Utah Valley will all be in attendance with the Thunderbirds playing a game against each of them except for UVU.
Baylor and Notre Dame each opened the season as one of the top-25 ranked teams in the country. The Fighting Irish have since fallen out of the rankings, but are still receiving votes in the polls. The Bears come into this week as the No. 24 ranked team in the NFCA Coaches Poll.
Game Info
The Thunderbirds will open the tournament on Friday March 1 at 12:30 p.m. against CSU Bakersfield. They will follow that game up with a matchup against Baylor University at 3:00 p.m.
On day two the Thunderbirds will take on Utah State at 12:00 p.m. and Notre Dame at 2:30 p.m. Their final game of the tournament will take place on Sunday March 3 at 10:00 a.m. against St. Mary's (CA).
