CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will be heading west this week for six games in five days in California. The Thunderbirds will open with a doubleheader on March 13 against California Baptist University. They will then compete in a tournament hosted by UC Riverside from March 15-17 where they will play games against Northern Kentucky and the host Highlanders.
Last Time Out
Last Sunday the Thunderbirds hosted Utah Valley for a doubleheader in St. George at the Canyons Softball Complex. The T-Birds kept pace with the Wolverines in the hits column, but ultimately dropped both games.
Mikelle Magalogo had four hits on the day, including two home runs. The junior had six RBIs, scored three runs, and even took over catching duties in game two after starting game one at first base. Dream Weaver, Madison Tuft, and Rylie Nance all had three hits on the day as the Thunderbirds compiled 21 hits on the day as a team.
Magalogo now leads the team in batting average, hitting .318 in 22 at-bats, and slugging percentage with a huge .727. She also is at the top in on base percentage (.400), RBIs (7), home runs (3), and total bases (16). Weaver and Madison Tuft are right behind her, both hitting .308 in 39 at-bats.
Opponent Preview
The Thunderbirds will play three different teams throughout the week, California Baptist, Northern Kentucky, and UC Riverside, with two games against each one.
The CBU Lancers come into the week with an 8-13 record in their first season as a Division I team. They last competed in a tournament hosted by Fresno State, winning four of the six games they played. The Lancers were able to pick up two wins over North Dakota, one over Montana, and one over UC Santa Barbara.
The NKU Norse come in with a 4-13 record so far this season. They are currently in the midst of a five game losing streak with their last win coming on March 8 over CSU Northridge at a tournament hosted by Santa Clara.
The UCR Highlanders are currently 10-12 on the season and have won their last six matchups. They swept all five of their games last weekend as they hosted the Highlander Classic including wins over Omaha, Houston, and San Diego.
Game Info
Wednesday's doubleheader against the Lancers is set to start at 3:30 p.m. Mountain time (2:30 p.m. Pacific). There will be no stream of the games, but live stats can be found at cbulancers.com
The Thunderbirds will play all three days at the weekend tournament, starting with two games on Friday. They will take on Northern Kentucky at 10:00 a.m. Mountain time followed by a matchup with UC Riverside at 3:00 p.m. They will then face NKU again on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and the Highlanders again on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
