Softball Set to Play Cougars Before Hosting Bengals for Series

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will play their final non-conference game this week on Wednesday April 24 against BYU before hosting their first Big Sky series at Kathryn Berg Field against Idaho State starting on April 26.

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds were swept by the Portland State Vikings over the weekend falling to 3-9 in Big Sky play. They scored just five runs in the series and had just 10 hits a week after scoring 24 runs and compiling 40 hits against Northern Colorado.

Makall Whetten and Mikelle Magalogo both had three hits in the series, with Whetten picking up one in each game.

Scouting Report: BYU Cougars (20-20)

The Cougars have had a strong start to their conference season since coming down to Kathryn Berg Field at the beginning of the month and handing the Thunderbirds a 13-4 loss. They have won both of the two series' they have played in and even picked up a five inning win over Utah Valley. BYU most recently lost to No. 3 Washington last Wednesday 3-13.

Rylee Jensen still leads the Cougars at the plate, hitting .411 in 124 at-bats. The junior was named the West Coast Conference, College Sports Madness, and Louisville Slugger NFCA Player of the Week for her performance two weeks ago in which she went 9-for-10 in a three-game series against Pacific.

The Cougars have won the six matchups with the Thunderbirds' last win coming in 2016.

Scouting Report: Idaho State Bengals (15-22, 5-6 BSC)

The Bengals opened up Big Sky play with back to back series wins over Portland State and Montana, but recently have lost five of their last six games, getting swept by Northern Colorado and losing a series to Weber State.

Freshman Autumn Pease leads the Bengals and is second in the Big Sky in ERA with a 2.48. She has eight wins and two saves and has been named Big Sky Pitcher of the Week twice in her first season in the conference.

Junior Emma Bordenkecher is fourth in the Big Sky in batting average with a .373 and third in home runs with seven.

Game Info

Wednesday's game at Gail Miller Field is set to begin at 6:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live on BYUtv and live stats will be available at tbirdstats.com.

The weekend's three-game series will begin on Friday at 1:00 p.m. with a doubleheader. The series finale will be played at noon on Saturday. All three games will be streamed live on watchbigsky.com and live stats will be available at tbirdstats.com.
