Soccer Set to Take On No. 14 Cougars Before Returning for First Home Match

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team has a big weekend ahead of them as they will travel north to Provo to take on the No. 14 ranked BYU Cougars on Friday August 30 and then return home to host their first home match of the season against California Baptist University on Sunday September 1.

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds opened their 2019 regular season last Saturday in Las Vegas against CSUN. Despite being able to hold the Matadors scoreless in the first half, they would go on to give up four second-half goals and lose the match 4-0.

Scouting Report: No. 14 BYU Cougars (2-0)

The Cougars came into the season as an unranked team, but after beating both Alabama and Mississippi State last week on the road, they are now the No. 14 ranked team in the country according to both the United Soccer Coaches' Poll and Top Drawer Soccer.

Junior Mikayla Colohan scored both game-winning goals in last week's contests. She scored in the ninth minute against the Crimson Tide as BYU went on to win 1-0 and then again against the Bulldogs in the 85th minute to give the Cougars the 2-1 victory.

Friday's match will be the first of three home games for the Cougars as they will take on Utah and Texas A&M after opening their home season against the Thunderbirds.

Scouting Report: California Baptist University (2-0)

The Lancers are off to a hot start in 2019, having already scored six goals and given up just one in their two wins last week over Holy Cross and UC Riverside. Five different Lancers have scored goals while three others picked up assists. Junior Amy Aquino is the leading scorer with two goals, one in each game.

This is just the second season as a Division I team for CBU. They finished their first season 12-5-1 and 4-4-0 in the WAC. They were able to beat the Thunderbirds 2-0 in California in 2018.
