OREM, Utah -- The Southern Utah University Thunderbird cross country teams opened their 2019 campaign at UVU on August 31. Several young athletes proved to be strong competitors for the Thunderbirds.
Maddy Francis started the meet with a first place finish clocking a time of 18:11.0. She was immediately followed by Harley Taylor and Haley Tanne. Samantha Taylor followed in sixth with a time of 19:06.8.
"Looking at these women, I think they are going to be a strong team this year," commented head coach Eric Houle. "These young athletes are looking better than we anticipated."
On the men's side of the team, Thomas Grant locked in a third place finish with a time of 15:51.9. Jason Quinn and Jacob Francis followed.
"These men accomplished the mission at hand this week," added Houle. " We just wanted to run these athletes to get some more experience under our belts and make sure we are ready for future competition."
This invitational gave the Thunderbird cross country team an opportunity to run new and less experienced athletes before the season continues.
The T-Birds will compete next at UC Riverside on September 14.
