CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team hosted their first home match of 2019 Sunday afternoon against the California Baptist University Lancers. A Lancer goal in the first half would give CBU the 1-0 victory by the end of the 90 minutes.
"Obviously it's a progression," head coach Fred Thompson said. "The first game against CSUN there were mistakes that we thought we could fix relatively quickly, the BYU game was always going to be about playing in front of 4,000 people in a postseason atmosphere, and today was a fight. I thought everybody put in a good effort, we created a few really good opportunities, but things just didn't break our way."
The Thunderbirds had their best day so far offensively with four shots in the first half and eight in the second for a total of 12 on the day. MaKenzie Lawrence had four of the 12 shots, and Allyson Carlisle had three, two of them on goal.
Brianna Aldridge made four saves in the first half before having to come out of the game. Freshman Isabella Whitmore played the rest of the game in goal, making three saves of her own.
The Lancers scored their goal in the 34th minute when Ari Coronado got ahold of a loose ball in the box.
The Thunderbirds will now head out on a three-game road stretch with two games in Texas and one in Wyoming over the next two weeks.
