EDINBURG, Texas -- The Thunderbird soccer team fell to 0-4 on Friday evening as they dropped a close contest to the UTRGV Vaqueros on the road, 1-0.
"It was a very even game and well played by both teams. A set piece made the difference like it often will. We got the opportunity to get a few more people played in and we'll continue to build. There were a lot of positives tonight," head coach Fred Thompson said.
The first half ended in a 0-0 draw between the T-Birds and Vaqueros, as both teams played solid defense and kept their opponents off the board.
In the second half, UTRGV took the lead in the 60th minute when Sarah Bonney took an assist from Anna Torslov to put the Vaqueros up 1-0.
Neither team was able to put another goal in the net, ending the contest at the previously mentioned score.
UTRGV was able to outshoot the Thunderbirds 24-3 on the evening, and had a 9-3 advantage in terms of shots on goal.
T-Bird goalie Isabella Whitmore finished the contest with eight saves.
The Thunderbirds will wrap up their Texas road swing on Sunday against the UTEP Miners. That contest is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. MT.
