CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah soccer team hosted the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners Friday afternoon for their second home game of the season, losing the match 2-1.
"From the start it has been about progression and building for Big Sky play and we have continued on that path," head coach Fred Thompson said. "Sunday will be a good test against a very strong Boise State team. Being able to battle Friday and battle Sunday puts us in the rhythm for conference play and I believe we are ready for it."
The Roadrunners struck first and it was early. Sophie Freeman put one in the back of the net in the fifth minute to give CSUB the quick 1-0 lead.
They would hold that lead for almost the entirety of the first half, until with just over two minutes until halftime, MaKenzie Lawrence and Jaylynn Barton teamed up to give the Thunderbirds their first goal of the season. The T-Birds played the ball into the box on a corner kick where it bounced around for a significant amount of time. Barton got the ball to head towards the goal where Lawrence redirected it past the goalkeeper to tie things up.
The tie wouldn't last long however, as the Roadrunners would take a 2-1 lead just 16 seconds into the second half. They would be able to keep the Thunderbirds off the board for the remainder of the game to take home the victory.
The Thunderbirds will be back in action on Sunday as they host Boise State at Thunderbird Soccer Field.
