Softball Set to Compete In San Diego State’s 30th Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball team will head to California this weekend to compete in the 30th Annual Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State. They will play BYU, CSU Fullerton, and the host Aztecs over Friday and Saturday.

Last Time Out

The Thunderbirds competed in the UNLV Rebel Kickoff this weekend where they went 1-4 in games against Oregon State, CSUN, and UNLV. Their lone win came on Saturday 2-1 over the Beavers. It was the the first win for head coach Don Don Williams and the first win for the program over a Pac-12 opponent since 2014.

Paige Reynolds hit .333 (4-for-12) in her first five games in a Thunderbird uniform. She slugged .500 with a triple in Saturday's game against CSUN. Dayna Hokanson hit .308 (4-for-13) with three RBI, two walks, two runs scored, and an on-base percentage of .438. Mikelle Magalogo slugged .643 with nine total bases, three RBI, and two runs scored.

Campbell/Cartier Classic Preview

The Thunderbirds will play three teams in two days with one game against BYU, one against CSU Fullerton, and two against the host Aztecs.

The Cougars opened the season in Mexico last weekend where they went 2-2 at the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge. They picked up wins over George Washington and Nevada while dropping contests against Oregon and No. 3 Oklahoma. BYU finished last season with a record of 30-26 and won their sixth straight WCC title.

The Titans hosted their own season opening tournament last weekend and went 4-1, with their only loss coming at the hands of University of the Pacific. Sophomore Dani Martinez was named Pitcher of the Week and Megan Delgadillo was named Freshman of the Week in the Big West for week one. CSUF is the favorite to win the Big West after winning their fourth consecutive title last season.

The Aztecs were in Jacksonville, Florida for opening weekend where they went 4-1 in the River City Leadoff Tournament, with their only loss coming at the hands of Villanova. They will come into the weekend 4-2 after dropping a contest with UC Riverside on Wednesday. SDSU finished the 2019 season with a 25-26 record.

Tournament Info

The Thunderbirds will open the tournament against BYU on Friday at 12:30 p.m. followed by a game against San Diego State at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday they will play CSU Fullerton at 3:00 p.m. and they will close out the tournament against the Aztecs at 8:00 p.m.
