CHENEY, Wash. — The Southern Utah University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought battle to Eastern Washington 2-0, Friday afternoon.
With the loss, the Thunderbirds dropped to (1-10-0) overall and (0-3-0) in the Big Sky, while Eastern Washington improved their record to 4-7-0 on the year and (2-1-1) in conference play.
"Credit to Eastern for finding a way,'' said SUU coach Kai Edwards. "They are very well-coached, have won conference titles, and that experience was the difference. We had chances, missed a penalty kick, and rattled the post. Things are clicking more and we look forward to the challenges at Idaho "
The Thunderbirds got off to a slow start as Eastern Washington's attack came out strong and immediately put the T-Birds on their heels. The Eagles controlled the time of possession early and began making deep runs inside the Thunderbirds' final third. EWU got the scoring started in the 13th minute when forward Gillian Martin broke through the middle of the SUU defense and drew a foul inside the Thunderbirds' 18-yard box, awarding a penalty kick to Eastern Washington. Midfielder Madison Kem stepped up to take the PK and sent a low shot to the bottom left corner of the net giving the home side the lead.
The Thunderbirds were not fazed by the early goal, as they started to settle in and find opportunities of their own. SUU's attack began to assert its presence in the midfield and started to find chances inside the penalty box. Southern Utah's best chance of the first half came in the 35th minute when Midfielder Kamryn Farro collected a pass just outside the box and pummeled a high shot to the top left corner of the net that was saved by EWU's goalkeeper. The Thunderbirds fired six more shots on goal but weren't able to find their way into the back of the net sending them into half trailing.
SUU carried that same energy with them into the second half as it came out on the front foot. The T-Birds nearly found the equalizer in the 46th minute when defender Emma Leong was fouled inside the Eagles' box giving the Thunderbirds a Penalty kick of their own. SUU's goal leader Ashley Rivera stepped up to take the PK and fired a shot to the left corner, but EWU goalkeeper Kaylee Winston guessed correctly and batted the shot out of bounds spoiling the Thunderbirds' hopes of tying the game.
Eastern Washington continued to throw their own jabs back at the Thunderbirds and broke through again in the 51st minute when Madison Kem scored her second goal of the day. The T-Birds fought hard to get back in the game, but in the end, it was not enough.
