T-Birds Draw with Idaho in Sunday Afternoon Slugfest

MOSCOW, Idaho-- The Southern Utah University women's soccer team earned a scoreless draw in a competitive back and forth game with Idaho Sunday afternoon.

With the tie, the Thunderbirds improved to (1-10-1) overall and (0-3-1) in the Big Sky Conference, while Idaho also improved to (8-2-2) this season and (2-1-1) in conference play.

"We did very well against a very good team, '' said SUU head coach Kai Edwards," We should have won that game because we were all over them in the first half, but the team stayed disciplined and earned a point on the road in the second game of the weekend. Amazing effort by this team and credit to our subs who stepped on the field and brought some energy for us. That was the difference."

SUU came out of the gate hard, dominating the possession battle and pushing the Vandals back deep into their 18-yard box. The T-Birds began to create multiple chances inside their opponent's final third and fired four shots on goal in the first 15 minutes of the match. Their best chance of the first half came in the 38th minute when Midfielder Hailey Hamataka collected the ball from outside the box and launched a shot to the top right corner of the net that deflected off the post, ricocheted downward towards the goal line, and bounced into the reach of the Idaho goalkeeper who pounced on the ball, spoiling the Thunderbirds chances of taking the lead.

After a dominant start from the Thunderbirds, the Vandals began to find the space to counter SUU's attack. The Vandals saw multiple quality looks come their way as they fired seven first-half shots, but they weren't able to find the back of the net, sending the game into half scoreless.

Coming out of the half the Vandals kept that same energy and began to take a slight edge in the possession battle and make deep runs into the SUU final third, earning five second-half corner kicks. But the T-Birds backline led by Delaney Peery and Mckenzie Emery held stout thwarting each of those attempts, sending the game into overtime.

Each team continued to trade runs back and forth in overtime trying to find a way to breakthrough. Idaho nearly found the game-winner in the 95th minute when the Vandals earned a free kick just inside midfield. Midfielder Rebekkah Reyes set up to take the set-piece and fired a high looping ball to Midfielder Savannah Foster who headed the ball to a streaking Jadyn Hanks who smashed a header of her own past the goalkeeper into the back of the net, but the far official deemed Hanks was in an offside position taking the game-winner from the Vandals, sending the game into a second overtime.

In double overtime, both teams scrambled to try and find a way to break through, but neither team found the back of the net, ending the game in a draw.

  • The Thunderbirds outshot their opponent for the second straight match, firing a total of 11 shots to Idaho's 10.

  • Ashley Rivera led the Thunderbirds with three shots on goal in the match.

  • Defenders Emma Leong, Natalia Sepulveda, and Adelayo Oguntade all played a full 110 minutes while recording multiple clearances for the Thunderbirds.

  • This is the third overtime match that the T-Birds have played this season.

  • Sunday marked SUU's first out of state point earned in conference play since drawing Montana in 2018

SUU now looks ahead to their final home stretch as they take on Idaho State on Friday, October 8th, then Weber State on Sunday, October 10th. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
