Southern Utah University swept the Idaho State Bengals in their home volleyball matchup three sets to none in a dominant performance that saw no lead changes or tie scores in the first two sets.
SUU started off the afternoon with a four to zero run, before adding a five point run shortly after. The Thunderbirds stretched their lead to 10 points with a kill from Stacey Hone to make the score 21-11. Idaho State tried to mount a comeback but ultimately, SUU took the set 25-18. The Bengals marked 10 errors in the set to help the Thunderbirds seal the opening period.Â
Idaho State kept it close in the second set, including coming within two points of tying the set after a Kaia Rhodes kill to set the score at 14-16. SUU took control from there, winning the set 25-22.Â
The Thunderbirds had been in control through the first two sets as the game had seen zero tie scores or lead changes until the first point of Set 3 was taken by the Bengals. ISU finally found some control leading 11-7 in the third set before the Thunderbirds took control back for themselves. SUU would take the third and final set 25-20 for the clean sweep of the Bengals.
Stacey Hone led the Thunderbirds with nine kills, with Raegen Ashby adding eight of her own. Ronnie Robinson added seven kills with a .238 hitting percentage, but Ashby led both teams with a .375 percentage.
SUU as a team, recorded a .253 hitting percentage, compared to Idaho State's .103. The Thunderbirds added 11 blocks in the matchup, with the Bengals only recording three.Â
Southern Utah moves to 2-6 in Big Sky play and 6-14 overall. SUU takes the court again next week facing the University of Montana on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Montana State University on Saturday at noon. Both matchups will take place at home in the American First Event Center.
