PORTLAND, Ore. - The Southern Utah volleyball team opened their West Coast trip Thursday night with a 0-3 (14-25, 16-25, 19-25) loss to Portland State in Portland.
Reagan Ashby and Julie Castleman both had five kills, but the T-Birds were held to just a .053 hitting percentage overall. Southern Utah did out-block the Vikings however, putting up 12 blocks as a team. Ashby had six blocks while Carissa Richie and Stacey Hone both had four.
The Vikings did most of their work on the defensive side of the ball, racking up 50 digs while holding the Thunderbirds to their second-worst hitting percentage of the season.
Down 0-2 after the first two sets, the Thunderbirds were able to build up a 10-6 lead in the third set, but a 10-0 scoring run for Portland State would turn the tide in their favor. The T-Birds put together a small scoring run towards the end of the set, but it wouldn't be enough as the Vikings swept the match.
The Thunderbirds will take on Sacramento State next on Saturday October 9 in California.
