Thunderbird Softball Announces 2022 Season Schedule

CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah softball program and head coach Don Don Williams have announced their upcoming schedule for the 2022 season.

"We have put together a challenging non-conference schedule this year," Williams said. "By playing tougher competition at the bigger venues it gives our team the experience of performing on the biggest stages. Ultimately, our non-conference schedule will prepare us for the strong competitive schedule in the Big Sky."

The Thunderbirds will open the season at the Mike Candrea Classic hosted by the University of Arizona from February 10 to February 12. They will play the host Wildcats twice while also playing the University of Alabama and Oregon State.

The following weekend they will compete in the Campbell/Cartier Classic hosted by San Diego State University from February 18 to February 20. They will play the host Aztecs, future WAC opponent California Baptist, Army, and CSUN twice.

Southern Utah will then compete in the esteemed Mary Nutter Classic the following weekend in Palm Springs, California from February 25 to February 27. They will play UC Riverside, Long Beach State, UC San Diego, Oregon State, and Loyola Marymount all in the heart of the Southern California desert.

The Thunderbirds' final non-conference tournament of the season will be a tournament hosted by Dixie State from March 10 to March 13. They will take on the host Trailblazers, the University of New Mexico, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of Maine twice in the tournament.

The T-Birds will travel to Provo for a doubleheader against BYU on March 19 before opening Big Sky play on March 25-26 against Northern Colorado on Kathryn Berg Field. Montana will roll into Cedar City the following weekend for a three-game series on April 1-2.

Southern Utah will play back-to-back road conference series against Weber State (April 8-9) and Portland State (April 15-16) before returning home to host Dixie State (April 19) and Idaho State (April 22-23).

Their final home game of the season will be on April 27 against BYU and their final regular season series will be against Sacramento State in California on May 6-7.

The Big Sky Conference Championship Tournament will take place from May 11 to May 14 in Ogden, Utah.

This will be the final season in the Big Sky for the Thunderbirds before transitioning to the WAC in 2023.
