CEDAR CITY, Utah -- The Thunderbird women's volleyball team completed a regular season sweep of the Portland State Vikings on Monday evening, as they knocked off their Big Sky foe in a 3-0 sweep.
The victory improves the Thunderbirds to 4-5 on the year, and pulls them back to .500 in Big Sky Conference play at 4-4.
The opening set stayed incredibly close throughout, and with the Thunderbirds leading 23-22 the Vikings called timeout to talk things over. The Thunderbirds were able to prevail, however, and took the opening set 25-23 on an attacking error by Portland State. Reagan Ashby had four kills and hit .571 for the T-Birds in the opening set, along with having three blocks.
Things came a little easier for the Thunderbirds in the second set, as they won it 25-18. With the score knotted at 5-5 early in the frame, but used a 5-0 run to take the lead and create some separation. Their lead continued to build to 15-7, and they didn't look back, eventually winning by seven points.
The third and final set went about the same way as the second, as the T-Birds secured the match with a 25-19 set victory.
Ashby led the Thunderbirds in kills with seven total, hitting .333 for the match.
Stacey Hone, Andreanna McKee and Bridgett Triplett all finished with six kills in the match.
Corrin Peterson finished with 20 assists in the match.
The Thunderbirds will be back in action next weekend, as they'll head to Flagstaff, Arizona for a two-match series against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Sunday and Monday.
