Thomas Tops T-Birds After Day One of BYU Spring Classic

HURRICANE, Utah - Junior Tori Thomas led the way for Southern Utah women's golf today during the first two rounds of competition at the BYU Spring Classic held at Sand Hollow Golf Course in Hurricane, Utah.

Thomas, a local from St. George, Utah just 20 minutes away, continued her strong recent play at courses near her hometown.  After tying for 20th during the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird at Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George this weekend, Thomas cranked out a 150 (72, 78) to stand in sole possession of 20th today.

Thomas opened the day with a phenomenal even-par 72 that included a one-under back nine 35. Thomas also collected a pair of birdies down the stretch.  She followed that up with a second-round 78 that featured two more birdies on the front nine on holes 4 and 7.

As a team, the T-Birds finished in 11th heading into the final round tomorrow.  The Thunderbirds carded a 633 (316, 317) during the two rounds.  Texas Tech led the way in the team standings with a 581 (291, 290), while Nevada's Victoria Gailey topped the individual leaderboard with a four-under 140 (68, 72).

Junior Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan closed out the day with a 154 (80, 74) to tie for 33rd. Yongyuan demonstrated some grit by cutting six shots from a tough first round.  She picked up a birdie on the ninth hole in the first round before snaring four birdies during the final round.

Junior Lexi Hamel (84, 82), sophomore Hannah Gleason (83, 83) and freshman Tanyatorn (Excel) Thalangkarn (81, 85) all tied for 68th with two-round 166s.

Hamel started the day off well with a one-over front nine that included a birdie on the seven. She followed with a two-over front nine during the second round as well.

Gleason's strongest golf of the first round came by way of a four-over back nine, before turning in a two-over front nine.  Gleason pocketed a twosome of birdies during the second round on holes 5 and 16.

Thalangkarn enjoyed a two-over front nine during round one while picking up a birdie on 17 as well.  She marked another duo of birdies in the second round on holes 15 and 17.

Senior Launa Wilson tied for 78th playing as an individual with a 171 (84, 87). She performed her best on the front nine with a four over and five over in subsequent rounds.

Freshman Cornelia Karlsson, slated to compete as an individual, withdrew prior to play.

As a team, the T-Birds notched 15 birdies throughout the two rounds.
