SEDONA, Ariz. - Chanikan (Pluem) Yongyuan paved the way for Southern Utah women's golf at the Red Rocks Invitational this weekend in Sedona, Ariz. Â
Following a darkness-shortened second day of competition, Yongyuan closed out her two-day effort with a three-round 219 (71, 76, 72) to finish fifth overall. Â Meanwhile, SUU carded a completely-consistent 915 (305, 305, 305) for seventh overall. Grand Canyon (294, 295, 295) and Gonzaga (297, 301, 286) tied for the team title with matching 884s, while GCU's Paytton Ferginger won the individual trophy with a 208 (68, 73, 67).
Yongyuan closed out the day with an even-par 72, including three birdies for a total of six birdies on the day. Â She had a smooth day with a 36 on both the front and back half.
Lexi Hamel fired a 227 (76, 77, 74) to tie for 19th overall. Â Her final round included a three-under back nine with a trio of birdies down the stretch. She collected eight total birdies during the two days of competition.
Tanyatorn (Excel) Thalangkarn tied for 49th with a 235 (76, 76, 83). She opened the tournament strong with four birdies in the first round and a fifth birdie to complete day one. Â She added two more birdies for seven total for the invitation.
Tori Thomas notched a 236 (82, 76, 78) to tie for 53rd overall. She turned in a pair of birdies during the three rounds with her best golf coming by way of a pair of two-over front and back halves in the second round.Â
Hannah Gleason closed out play for the Thunderbirds with a 241 (83, 77, 81) to tie for 75th. Â She had five birdies in total, including four during her second round of action.Â
Next up, SUU women's golf returns to Arizona for the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the AK-Chin Southern Dunes in Maricopa, Ariz., on April 5-6.
