CEDAR CITY, Utah - The Southern Utah volleyball team defeated Idaho State 3-2 (25-22, 16-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-10) for the second night in a row Sunday night to remain undefeated in Big Sky matches at home.
The Thunderbirds move to 6-7 overall and 6-6 in Big Sky play, good enough for sixth place in the conference standings.
Andreanna McKee led the T-Birds offensively with a career-high 17 kills. Stacey Hone had 13 kills and Elisa Lago had 12. Corrin Peterson had 40 assists and 13 digs while Sarah Gasper had 18 digs and Lago had 15. Mckenzie Dowell contributed 7 blocks, including two solo.
The match played out nearly the same way as it did Saturday night with the Thunderbirds winning the first set, ISU winning the second and third, and the T-Birds winning the fourth and fifth.
The Thunderbirds out hit the Bengals in the first set .268 to .179 and used a 5-0 scoring run to put the right amount of distance between themselves and ISU to win the set 25-22.
The Bengals won the next two sets, beating Southern Utah by nine in set two, but they only won by three in set three.
Idaho State had a huge scoring run in the fourth set to tie things up at 15-15, but the Thunderbirds outscored them 7-2 down the stretch to close out the win and tie the match at two sets apiece.
Sunday night's fifth set played out a lot closer than Saturday night's but the T-Birds still dominated in the winner-take-all set. They hit .346 as a team in the set with just two errors while holding the Bengals to a .042 hitting percentage. They closed out the win on a 4-0 scoring run.
The Thunderbirds will travel to Montana State next weekend for a two-match series with the Bobcats.
