Thunderbird Softball Looks to Cage Bears During Big Sky Road Trip

CEDAR CITY, Utah. -  The Southern Utah softball team heads to Greeley, Colo., for another three-game Big Sky Conference series as the T-Birds face Northern Colorado on April 30 and May 1.

Southern Utah stands in second-place in the Big Sky Conference this season, three games behind leader Weber State.  This weekend's opponent is 5-7 so far in the league and stands sixth overall.

Brooke Brown and Josey White both have a shot at Lindi Kennedy's 2007 home run record of 15.  Brown is tied for second with 13 big flies, while White is tied for sixth with 12.

SUU's single-season slugging percentage record is the most in jeopardy with a trio of T-Birds in the top 5.  Sarah Murphy holds the record with a .765 slugging percentage in 2018.  White (.792) and Brown (.779) both currently lead the mark, while Kalena Shepherd (.720) is among the top five all time.

Josey White leads the league in slugging percentage (.792), doubles (13) and total bases (99), while Brooke Brown is tops in RBI (456) and home runs (13).  Dayna Hokanson has the most runs scored with 36, while Makall Whetten remains a magnet for opponent pitches with the most hit-by-pitch with 16. 

Weekend Preview

Northern Colorado holds a 9-22 record with a 5-7 Big Sky Conference mark.

Mady Young is the top offensive force for UNC.  She boasts a .375 batting average, 1.097 on-base percentage in 31 games played.  She has hit 10 doubles, three triples and four home runs thus far this year with a .667 slugging percentage.

Erin Caviness is the top pitcher on the squad with a 5-12 record and 5.03 ERA in 103 innings pitched.  She's struck out 61 opposing batters thus far this season. 

Game Day Information

All three games will take place in Greeley, Colo.

The pair of teams will compete in a doubleheader on Friday, April 30 at 1 p.m. MST.  The squads will then complete the three-game set with a single tilt on Saturday, May 1 at 12 noon MST.

Last Time Out

Southern Utah delivered Weber State's lone Big Sky loss of the season with an exciting 8-6 triumph as part of a 1-2 record against the Wildcats last weekend.

The Thunderbirds hit a trio of home runs during the three-game homestand with Brooke Brown, Josey White and Makall Whetten each rocketing big flies out of Kathryn Berg Field.  In fact, with Whetten's 10th dinger of the season, the T-Birds had their first trio of double-digit home run artists since 2014.

Payton Goodrich moved to 5-10 on the season with the win against WSU, while Tyler Denhart took the two losses to drop to 8-9.
