Thunderbirds Continue Win Streak With 2-0 Victory Against Idaho State

CEDAR CITY, Utah. The Southern Utah women's soccer team won the first of a two-match series against Idaho State slated this weekend in Cedar City. With the 2-0 shutout victory, the T-Birds have now won three straight.

The win guaranteed SUU a .500 record in the regular season as the team is 4-3-1 on the year with the possibility of ending its regular-season campaign with five wins.

That's the most wins for SUU since a 5-13 effort in 2017.   A .500 season would be a first for Southern Utah since an 8-8-2 outing in 2015.

The Thunderbirds pressed the action to start the match with a trio of shots in the first half.  SUU connected on a pair of those shots.

In the 19th minute, Rachael Hunt converted on a perfect assist from Kate Schirmer to reach the back of the net.

Jaylyn Barton pushed the score to 2-0 in the 35th minute on an corner-kick assist from Kamryn Farro.  Barton has scored in each of her previous three matches.

Idaho State attempted a comeback in the second half with the Bengals on the attack for most of the rest of the contest.  ISU had its chances, but Southern Utah defended well and kept the ball out of SUU's net.

The Thunderbirds outshot Idaho State, 6-5. Barton and Hunt led the team in shots with two each.

Jennifer Kovisto had a match-high four saves at goalkeeper to put away the Bengals.

SUU hosts Idaho State again with a 12 noon contest on Sunday to close the regular season for the Thunderbirds.

A win on Sunday would secure SUU's first winning season since going 7-6-5 in 2007.
