NOTES AND QUOTES
-SUU took down Hope International by a score of 1-0 to open the season. Victoria Caucci scored the game-winning goal in the 49th minute on an assist from Evi Anderson.
-The T-Birds were picked to finish eighth in the Big Sky preseason poll. Northern Arizona was selected as the favorite to win the league with Montana and Northern Colorado rounding out the top three.
-Athletic Director Debbie Corum announced a contract extension for Kai Edwards and promotion to Associate Head Coach for Mario Felix-Suarez prior to the start of the season. Edwards' extension will keep him in Cedar City through the 2024 season.
"We got better today, which is scary, but we got better. By halftime we had nine players in our regular rotation out for whatever reason, and then we looked up and saw four of our freshman players in their third-ever college game doing exactly what was asked of them. I felt it was our best possession of the year. We created chances that we need to finish, but we played better than we did Sunday. There's no moral victories, but we did get better today."
-Edwards after the team's match versus UNLV
"To go on the road and get a shutout win is always good. We did some very good things that we have been working to improve for weeks and that was good to see. We wasted some chances and need to be more clinical in the final third as we go forward. We played in an awesome stadium with loud fans which made for an exciting atmosphere under the lights."
-Edwards on the team's season-opening win
"My family and I are honored Debbie and Sonia Hahn are entrusting me with leading the young women of Southern Utah University. We are excited to grow this program to new heights and watch these ladies break barriers. We are blessed to work with amazing players and coaches who all have the same objectives to excel both in the classroom and on the field. Having future recruits and our current student-athletes know that I plan on being here for a long time with my wife, Tessa, and two kids, Kaleyna and Kanoa, is important to the success of SUU soccer."
