BOULDER, Colo. - The Southern Utah University men's golf team completed play at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational Tuesday, taking 16th place overall after shooting a combined 896 (+56) over 54 holes.
Mitchell Abbott led the way for the Thunderbirds, recording a score of 217 throughout the tournament to finish in a tie for 51st. Abbott had a stellar first round, shooting a two-under-par 68, and was at even-par through eight holes when play was suspended yesterday. Abbott finished the second round with a score of 73 (+3), and carded a six-over-par 76 in the third round this afternoon.
Jaxon Long finished one stroke behind Abbott for the tournament, ending up in a tie for 55th place on the final leaderboard. Long had his best round of the season to begin the tournament, shooting a one-over-par 71 yesterday morning, and was at eight-over-par through eight holes in the afternoon round. Long went on tally a 76 (+6) in the second round, and bounced back with another impressive 71 (+1) this afternoon after parring 13 holes and earning two birdies.
Atthasit (Anfield) Srichun and Seth Winterton each tied for 88th after finishing the event with an overall score of 232. Srichun recorded a 75 (+5) in the second round and an 80 in the third and final round. Winterton did the opposite, turning in a score of 80 (+10) in the second round and shooting a 75 (+5) in the final round after tallying 14 pars.
Leo Torres closed out the SUU lineup, finishing with an 85 in the second round and a 77 in the third round. Torres placed in a tie for 91st.
The University of Wyoming claimed the team victory in the event, and Brady McKinlay of Utah Valley won the individual title.

Southern Utah will return to the course in less than a week, traveling to Valencia, California to compete at the Bill Cullum Invitational beginning on Monday, October 10.
