PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Southern Utah University softball team dropped a pair of games to UC San Diego and Oregon State on Saturday, bringing their record to 0-4 at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

The T-Birds began their day with an evening matchup against UC San Diego, falling to the Tritons by a final score of 2-7.

Southern Utah started off the game with back-to-back singles by Gianna Carosone and Jayne Sepulveda. After a Josey White ground out advanced the runners, Makall Whetten laid a bunt down the first baseline and beat the throw to first, scoring Carosone. Reilly Williams followed that at-bat by drilling a ground ball up the middle, scoring Sepulveda, and giving the Thunderbirds a 2-0 lead.

The Tritons had one hit in their first two at-bats but broke through in the bottom of the third, putting together four hits and three runs.

UC San Diego scored three more times in the fifth and sixth innings combined, and the T-Birds failed to produce any more runs, as the Tritons went on to earn the victory.

Keimon Winston received the loss on the mound for SUU, pitching five innings and allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

In their second game of the doubleheader, Southern Utah was defeated by Oregon State, 19-0.

The T-Birds had a difficult time garnering any offensive production against one of the best pitching staffs in the country this season as they dropped their second game of the day.

Southern Utah will close out tournament play at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic tomorrow against Loyola Marymount, with first pitch slated for 12:30 p.m. MT.
